Racism In The Property Market

Updated: May 12, 2019

Earlier this year, a study by YouGove Omnibus found that 1 in 5 Malaysian experience racism when trying to rent a house. If you are Indian, there is a 50% chance of you being discriminated.

I posed as a tenant looking to rent property in the Klang Valley and found a significantly huge number of agents asked me for my race every time I wanted to view a property. I asked why did my race and not my financial capability to pay the rent matter and most answered that it was "the landlord's SOP."

One agent even required me to give my gender.

So the government is planning to introduce an anti-discriminatory clause in the proposed Residential Tenancy Act. Some landlords are for this but many are against. In the video below, I share my thoughts.I encourage your thoughts and comments on this matter but hope the discussion is kept civil and factual.
